Wealth

Because you desired wisdom above all else, and did not ask for victory over your enemies, or riches, or long life, I will give you not only the wisdom you asked for to rule my people righteously, but also the things you did not ask for: riches, wealth, and glory, so that there will be no king like you before or after you.

Time is more precious than money, and more valuable than anything in the world. It's the greatest treasure, the essence of life. Use time wisely for spiritual growth, and don't waste a single moment.

A person, O king, who makes charitable donations, attains wealth.

One who lacks wealth is not truly poor, but one who lacks good manners and conduct is indeed poor.

It is futile to be egotistic. Neither body nor wealth will last.

Pride, whether based on caste, state, language, or the strength of one's body, mind, or wealth, always gives rise to feelings of hatred and jealousy.

Saints know that wealth, body, and soul are gifts from God and belong to Him.

Then Janashruti Pautrayana took six hundred cows, a gold necklace, and a chariot drawn by mules, and went to him. He addressed him:

Maitreyi said: "Venerable sir, if indeed this whole earth, filled with wealth, were mine, would I become immortal through it, or not?" "No," said Yajnavalkya; "your life would be just like that of people who have abundant means, but there is no hope of immortality through wealth."

Maitreyi said: "Sir, if indeed this whole earth full of wealth were mine, would I become immortal through it?" "No," said Yajnavalkya, "your life would be just like the life of people who have abundant means; but of immortality there is no hope through wealth."

Man is not satisfied by wealth. When we have seen you, shall we desire riches? We shall live only as long as you rule. That boon alone is the one I must choose.

There is no wealth more valuable than what is given away.

"Maitreyi!" said Yajnavalkya, "I am about to renounce this state (of householder life). So let me make a final settlement between you and Katyayani."

"Here in the world people call cows and horses, elephants and gold, slaves and wives, fields and houses 'greatness.' I do not speak thus," he said, "for in that case one thing is established upon another."

But to no one else — even if one were to offer him this whole earth encircled by the waters and filled with wealth, he should know: this teaching is greater than that; yes, this is greater than that.

The worldly wealth is bound to decay, but wealth of God-knowledge or the Name of God is everlasting. This wealth stands by you in this world. It will also stay with you when this body is no more. Nobody can steal the wealth of the Name of God, nobody can burn it.

After all, what are you being proud of? The body? If this was under your control, man would have never become old or died. If you are proud of your wealth, if you are using it for oppressing others, if you think you can purchase or win over anybody else with it, all your pride is meaningless. A small incident may snatch away the wealth and cause pain.

Then Gautama went to the king's residence, and when he arrived the king showed him due honour. In the morning he went up to the audience hall, and the king said to him, 'Revered Gautama, choose a boon of human wealth.' He replied, 'Let human wealth remain yours, O King. Tell me the very speech you uttered in the presence of the boy.' The king was troubled.

Often we think that the world is made happy by wealth and riches alone. Go and ask the wealthy how much happiness falls to their share. They will say only this: wealth there certainly is, but happiness there is not.

When the wealth of contentment arises in the heart, all other riches become like dust. Then love comes to dwell in the heart, and humility comes to dwell there.
