Valmiki

Valmiki is the ancient sage-poet revered as the Adi Kavi (first poet) of Sanskrit literature and the author of the Ramayana, one of Hinduism's two great epics. His composition of 24,000 verses set the narrative template that inspired countless retellings across South and Southeast Asia.

Valmiki is traditionally venerated as the first poet in the Sanskrit literary tradition, credited with inventing the shloka metre after witnessing a hunter kill a crane and spontaneously crying out in grief. He is said to have been a reformed dacoit who, after encountering the sage Narada and undergoing deep penance, became a great rishi. His Ramayana narrates the life of Prince Rama — his exile, Sita's abduction by Ravana, and his eventual triumph — in seven books (kandas) totalling around 24,000 couplets. The text is considered both a religious scripture and the foundational work of Sanskrit poetry. Valmiki is also reputed to have sheltered Sita in his ashram and taught Rama's sons Lava and Kusha to sing the Ramayana.
