Nirankari Baba

"Nirankari Baba" is the revered title of the living Satguru of the Sant Nirankari Mission, a spiritual guide who imparts God-knowledge and carries forward a message of universal brotherhood, love, and selfless service.

"Nirankari Baba" is not the name of a single person but the loving and reverent title given to the Satguru, the living spiritual head of the Sant Nirankari Mission. The word Nirankar means "the Formless One" — the one Supreme Being who is beyond shape and name yet pervades and sustains all of creation. To be a Nirankari, in the Mission's understanding, is simply to be a devotee of this Formless God; and the Nirankari Baba is the guide who, by grace, helps seekers come to know that all-pervading Reality directly within their own hearts. The Sant Nirankari Mission traces its formal beginning to 25 May 1929, when Baba Buta Singh Ji (1873–1943) began sharing the message of God-realization in Rawalpindi, in undivided Punjab. From childhood Baba Buta Singh had a deep spiritual longing and a love for sacred verse; receiving Divine Knowledge from his own teacher, he devoted the rest of his life to awakening that same awareness in others. The mantle of Satguru then passed in turn to Baba Avtar Singh Ji (head 1943–1962), whose devotional compositions are gathered in the beloved scripture Avtar Bani; to Baba Gurbachan Singh Ji, who carried the Mission to people across India and abroad; to Baba Hardev Singh Ji, remembered worldwide for his radiant warmth and tireless humanitarian work; to Mata Savinder Hardev Ji; and, since 17 July 2018, to Mata Sudiksha Ji Maharaj, the sixth and present spiritual head. Across this lineage the title "Nirankari Baba" expresses the devotees' affection for whoever holds the seat of the living master. The Mission describes itself as an all-embracing spiritual movement, warmly open to people of every faith, nation, and background, welcoming all who wish to walk a path of love and devotion. Its central teaching is that God is one and formless, and that this Formless God can be truly known here and now through the grace of a living Satguru. This realization — often called Brahm Gyan, the knowledge of the Divine — is offered freely to any sincere seeker. Once a person perceives the same one Reality dwelling within all beings, a natural feeling of kinship with the whole human family arises and grows. From this insight flows the Mission's celebrated motto, "Universal Brotherhood," and its conviction that the highest worship is to love and serve one's fellow beings. The path the Nirankari Baba sets before devotees is gentle and practical, resting on three cherished pillars: Sewa, selfless service rendered without expectation of reward; Simran, the quiet remembrance of the Divine; and Satsang, the holy company of fellow seekers in which truth is heard, shared, and lived. Alongside these, the Satguru encourages subtle inner qualities that gently soften the ego and nurture humility, patience, and human goodness. The aim is not withdrawal from the world but a transformed way of living in it — with a calm mind, a loving heart, and hands ready to help. "We should always spread love, not hatred," runs the guidance often shared from the Satguru's seat; "equipped with love, we should love all and build a loving world." This inward teaching has borne abundant outward fruit. Under successive Babas the Mission has grown into a vast spiritual family with congregations across India and in many countries, and it has become widely admired for its humanitarian works — blood-donation drives, cleanliness and tree-planting campaigns, relief in times of disaster, and projects of education and social welfare. In recognition of this service the Mission's charitable foundation holds consultative standing with the United Nations. Yet for the devotee the heart of it all remains simple and personal: a living master, lovingly called Nirankari Baba, who points beyond every form to the one Formless God and quietly invites each soul to come home to that peace.
