Jesus

Jesus of Nazareth was a first-century Galilean teacher and healer whose message of love, mercy, forgiveness, and the kingdom of God became the heart of Christianity and a cherished wellspring of compassion admired by people across the world.

Jesus, called Jesus of Nazareth, is one of the most beloved and influential figures in human history, a teacher of love and mercy whose words have comforted and inspired countless hearts across two thousand years. According to the Gospel accounts that preserve his life and teaching, he was born around 4 BCE in Bethlehem to Mary and Joseph, and grew up in the small Galilean village of Nazareth. Joseph worked as a craftsman, often rendered as a carpenter, and Jesus is believed to have learned the same trade, spending his early years in quiet labor and devotion before stepping into his public ministry. That ministry began when Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist in the waters of the Jordan River, a moment that the tradition remembers as the dawning of his mission. From there he became an itinerant teacher, walking the roads and shorelines of Galilee with a circle of close companions, the twelve apostles, gathering crowds wherever he went. For roughly three years he traveled, taught, healed, and shared meals with people of every station, drawing near especially to the poor, the sick, the sorrowful, and those whom others overlooked. His tenderness toward the marginalized and his readiness to forgive became defining marks of his presence. At the center of his message was the kingdom of God, a vision of a world transformed by divine love, justice, and reconciliation. He proclaimed that this kingdom was near and invited all who heard him to turn their hearts toward God and toward one another. His teachings were often delivered in parables, vivid and memorable stories drawn from everyday life, such as the sower scattering seed, the mustard seed growing into a great tree, the lost sheep sought by a loving shepherd, and the prodigal son welcomed home with open arms. Through these simple tales he opened windows onto the mercy and generosity of God. The most cherished collection of his teaching is the Sermon on the Mount, preserved in the Gospel of Matthew. It opens with the Beatitudes, a series of blessings upon the poor in spirit, the gentle, the merciful, the peacemakers, and those who hunger for righteousness, lifting up qualities of heart that the world often passes by. In the same sermon he gave the Golden Rule, teaching that one should do to others as one would wish to be done to oneself, a principle of compassion echoed in many of the world's great traditions. He called his hearers to a love that reached even to those who opposed them, to pray for one another, to forgive freely, and to care for their neighbors as for themselves. He taught the prayer beginning Our Father, a model of trust, humility, and longing for God's will, which remains among the most widely spoken prayers on earth. Jesus summed up the whole of the moral life in two great commandments: to love God with all one's heart and to love one's neighbor as oneself. He spoke of God as a loving parent attentive to every sparrow and every soul, and he urged his followers not to be anxious but to seek first the things of the spirit. His gentleness with the wounded, his welcome of the outcast, and his insistence that purity of heart matters more than outward show gave his teaching a depth and warmth that has never faded. The Gospels recount that he journeyed at last to Jerusalem during the Passover season, where his earthly life drew to its close around 30 to 33 CE. His followers remembered the end of his life as an act of self-giving love poured out for the world, and from the earliest days they cherished the hope that his life and love had triumphed over death, a hope that became the heartbeat of the community gathered in his name. That small community of disciples grew, in the centuries that followed, into Christianity, today one of the most widely embraced faith traditions in the world, with followers on every continent. Beyond the bounds of any single community, Jesus is honored across many traditions as a supreme teacher of compassion, forgiveness, and peace. His call to love, to lift up the lowly, and to meet hardship with mercy continues to shape art, music, ethics, and the conscience of humanity. In the gentleness of his words and the steadfastness of his love, countless people across the ages have found a light to live by.
