Your arrogance has deceived you.

Everything on earth and in heaven is nothing compared to God, as Jeremias said: 'I looked at the earth and it was empty and nothing, and the heavens had no light in them.'

Jeremiah laments the destruction caused by the disorderly affections in the soul. He first describes the soul's beauty, and then its corruption, saying: 'Her Nazarites were whiter than snow, more pure than milk, more ruddy than old ivory, more beautiful than sapphire.'
