Guru Gobind Singh Ji was the tenth and last human Guru of Sikhism, a luminous poet, warrior-saint, and spiritual visionary who founded the Khalsa and enshrined the Guru Granth Sahib as the eternal Guru, shaping Sikh identity for all time.

Guru Gobind Singh Ji, revered as the tenth and final human Guru of the Sikh tradition, stands among the most radiant figures in the spiritual history of India. Born in 1666 in Patna, in present-day Bihar, he entered the world bearing the name Gobind Das, the only child of the ninth Guru, Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, and Mata Gujri Ji. Through his father he belonged to the Sodhi lineage of the Khatri community, inheriting a sacred line of Guruship that had begun with Guru Nanak Dev Ji and carried the living light of devotion across generations. From his earliest years he was steeped in the disciplines of prayer, learning, languages, and the martial arts, and he grew into a being of rare grace who united deep contemplation with serene courage. The young Guru's sacred mission began when, at the age of nine, he was formally installed as the tenth Guru in 1676. His revered father, Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, is honoured in the tradition for his selfless devotion to the freedom of conscience and the right of all people to worship according to their faith. This noble example deeply shaped the spirit of the young Guru, who carried forward the ideal that faith and justice are worthy of wholehearted devotion. Guru Gobind Singh Ji's most enduring and transformative contribution came in 1699, during the festival of Vaisakhi at Anandpur, when he founded the Khalsa, the community of the pure and devoted. In a moment of profound spiritual significance, he initiated the Panj Pyare, the Five Beloved Ones, through the ceremony of khande ka pahul, the baptism of the double-edged sword and sweetened nectar. He gave his Sikhs the surname Singh, meaning lion, and to women the name Kaur, meaning princess, dissolving distinctions of caste and birth and affirming the dignity and equality of every soul. He invited his Sikhs to embrace the Five Ks, the cherished articles of faith, as outward emblems of an inner commitment to devotion, discipline, and service. In a gesture of extraordinary humility, the Guru himself then knelt to be initiated by the very Five he had baptized, teaching forever that the Guru and the devoted community are bound together as one. A gifted poet and scholar fluent in many languages, Guru Gobind Singh Ji enriched the spiritual and literary heritage of Sikhism immensely. His compositions, gathered in the Dasam Granth, encompass devotional hymns, heroic and mythological narratives, and reflective verse that continue to inspire the faithful. Among his celebrated writings is the Zafarnama, the luminous Epistle of Victory, composed in Persian, a serene and dignified testament to truth, moral courage, and unwavering faith in the Divine. His poetry breathes with reverence for the One Eternal Creator, with compassion for humanity, and with a call to live nobly and with quiet fortitude in the service of righteousness. The Guru embodied the principle of Dharamyudh, the righteous defence of justice and the protection of the innocent and the vulnerable. Through every season of his life he remained steadfast, serene, and devoted to the will of the Divine. His own beloved sons offered their lives in this sacred cause, and the tradition honours them among the supreme acts of devotion ever made for faith and the freedom of conscience, a legacy that Sikhs cherish with the deepest reverence to this day. Perhaps his most far-reaching spiritual act came near the close of his earthly life in 1708 at Nanded, in present-day Maharashtra, when he declared that the line of human Gurus would culminate in him, and that the sacred scripture, the Guru Granth Sahib, would thereafter be the eternal Guru of the Sikhs. He thus enshrined the holy word itself as the living, perpetual source of guidance, and entrusted spiritual authority to the collective community of the faithful, the Guru Panth. In this way he gave Sikhism an enduring foundation that would carry its light across the centuries. Guru Gobind Singh Ji's legacy is immeasurable. He shaped the very identity of the Sikh people, instilling in them a spirit of courage, compassion, equality, and unshakeable devotion to the Divine. He affirmed the dignity of every human being, championed the equality of women and the dissolution of caste, and modeled a life in which saintliness and valour, humility and strength, devotion and service were perfectly united. Honoured by millions across the world, his birth is celebrated each year with joy and reverence, and his teachings continue to illuminate the path of the faithful. In the harmony of the scholar, the saint, and the protector of righteousness, Guru Gobind Singh Ji remains an eternal beacon of spiritual light, whose life and words call all who encounter them toward truth, fearlessness, and loving devotion to the One.
