Bulleh Shah

Bulleh Shah was an 18th-century Punjabi Sufi poet whose kafis (lyric poems) radically challenged religious orthodoxy, caste hierarchy, and sectarian identity in the name of pure love for God. He is beloved across South Asia for his fearless, witty, and deeply human voice.

Born into a family of Syed descent, Bulleh Shah became a disciple of Shah Inayat Qadiri, a mystic from the gardener (Arain) caste — a discipleship that scandalized his family and community but which he defended as the heart of true spirituality. His kafis are composed in simple, musical Punjabi and repeatedly overturn the pretensions of the learned and the pious, insisting that all external religious identity dissolves in the experience of divine love. He wrote: 'Destroy the mosque, destroy the temple, but do not break the human heart.' His poetry was transmitted orally for generations before being written down, and today it is sung by Sufi musicians across Punjab, making him one of the most quoted poets of the subcontinent. His shrine in Kasur, Pakistan, remains a living center of devotion.

Stay silent to survive. People cannot stand to hear the truth. They are hostile towards those who speak it and avoid them. However, truth is sweet to those who love it. Truth destroys worldly desires and brings joy and unexpected wealth to its lovers, which is obscured by worldly desires.
