On this, these verses are spoken: As a fire without fuel subsides into its own source, so the mind, with the exhaustion of its impulses, subsides into its own source. For one whose mind has thus subsided into its source and moves toward truth, no longer deluded by sense-objects — the bondages of karma are empty and do not follow. The mind alone is samsara; purify it with great effort. Whatever the mind dwells on, one becomes that — this is the eternal secret. Through the clarity of mind, one destroys all karma, good and evil alike; the serene soul, established in the Self, enjoys imperishable joy. When the mind of a creature is so intensely absorbed in sense-objects — if it were likewise absorbed in Brahman, who would not be freed from bondage? The mind is declared to be of two kinds — pure and impure. The impure is laden with desire; the pure is free from desire. Making the mind perfectly still, free from dissolution and distraction — when it reaches the state of no-mind, that is the supreme state. Restrain it in the heart only until it has dissolved completely. This alone is knowledge and liberation; all the rest is mere elaboration of texts. The joy attained by a mind purified by samādhi and fully lodged in the Self — it cannot be described in words; it is grasped directly by the inner instrument. As water disappears into water, fire into fire, sky into sky — so when the mind dissolves inward, the person is released. The mind alone is the cause of bondage and liberation for human beings; when attached to objects it causes bondage, when free of objects it is said to bring liberation. Now here is the hymn of Kautsāyani: You are Brahmā, and indeed Viṣṇu; you are Rudra, you are Prajāpati. You are Agni, Varuṇa, Vāyu; you are Indra, you are the maker of night. You are Manu and Yama; you are the earth and the imperishable. In your own purpose and in your natural purpose you dwell in heaven in many forms. O Lord of the universe, I bow to you — you are the soul of all, the doer of all deeds, the enjoyer of all, the māyā of all; you are the sovereign who delights in the play of the universe. Salutation to you whose nature is peace; salutation to you, the supremely hidden. To you who are beyond thought, beyond measure, without beginning and without end.

The sages, united with pure reason, renounce the results of their actions and, liberated from the cycle of birth, they attain a state of bliss.

So long as this soul does not know its real destination while dwelling in the body, it is not going to be liberated from the cycle of births and deaths. There is only one way to get rid of this wandering and that is to realise God while the human body is still there.

Sorrow has ravaged the kingdom of my heart like a ruthless army. Come back, glad Lord of Rome, and liberate the land! Before your power, the enemy will shatter and flee.
